Community Health Worker (CHW) Apprenticeship
The CHW Apprenticeship is a 16-month, paid training program offered to former clients and other members of the community. The apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with on-the-job experience.
Trusted Frontline Public Health Workers
CHWs mirror the population served and build community through community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy. In 2020 HPP’s long running CHW Program became a nationally accredited apprenticeship, the only CHW accreditation program in California.
Why become a CHW?
Many former clients and members of the community have been trained as CHWs and become long-term staff at HPP or moved on to roles in public health and the nonprofit sector.
On-the-Job Training
CHWs work with clients, gain reception skills, perform client intakes, build database and software proficiencies, provide outreach and learn other skills related to social service.
Partnership with the City College of San Francisco
CHW Apprentices take 14 units of core courses at CCSF. Upon completion, CHWs receive a nationally-recognized certification from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Women have participated in the program since 1995.
Community Health Worker graduates find employment within 30 days of graduating.
Of the credits necessary for a CHW Certificate are acquired at HPP and are transferable to other universities.
