A swath of bright, multi-colored fabric is quickly cut into tidy squares as Linda Hannawalt expertly assembles materials for her quilting class, a popular hit amongst HPP clients.
Every Thursday and Friday afternoon and two Wednesdays a month, Linda Hannawalt shares her love and talent for quilting with clients, teaching them a variety of techniques and helping them create unique and beautiful quilts.
Linda was first introduced to HPP through the San Francisco Quilters Guild, in which she organized efforts to provide forty quilts for a prenatal education class baby shower at HPP. Impressed with HPP’s array of services and helpful staff, Linda was moved to reach out and establish a weekly quilting program for clients utilizing her own donated materials and supplies.
“The clients keep me going; they are so passionate about sewing and creating quilts,” Hannawalt said. “What I enjoy the most about the class is the looks on their faces when they’ve made something special. We have fun, do creative work, and the clients get the opportunity to learn basic quilting techniques and work as a team. I’ll help them make a quilt as much as they want to stretch their imagination and work limit!”
In an effort to promote team building skills, all participants also work together to design and create quilts for the HPP families who attend the prenatal education classes. HPP client Dolores Singleton expresses her gratitude for the class. “Being able to be a part of the classes and create something I made on my own helps me stay positive within myself, and I also enjoy being able to give back to others in my community by making quilts for HPP’s families. Linda is great; she’s full of spirit, and there’s always something to look forward to in her classes!”
