We’re so proud of HPP Clinical Case Manager Taneshia Johnson, who recently earned her Masters in Social Work.
“When I was little my mother and I lived ‘doubled up’ with relatives all the time in the Fillmore district of San Francisco. I grew up wondering why my other friends had their own bedrooms and I didn’t. Why my mother worked two jobs and other people’s parents didn’t. As I got older I realized my mother was a single parent and had made a sacrifice for me by working two jobs in order to place me in some of the best schools in San Francisco such as St. Dominic’s and Immaculate Conception Academy.
This was my first experience learning how circumstances and systems place people in a situation to either succeed or not. Having so many barriers in life to complete my education stirred my passion to work in social services. I wanted to help people from communities similar to mine understand that their current situation can change with perseverance and determination. After earning by bachelor degree in human development at Cal State East Bay I worked in the field for about 5 years before I started my Masters in Social Work program. I decided to go back to school because I realized the more education I had the more I could help my community and be in a position where I can make change. My goal in life is to further my degree by earning my licenses and be in a position where I can make macro changes in some of our low income communities that tend to get overlooked.”
